Conflicting Patterns in Demand for U.S. Contingent Labor

While the rest of the contingent work market is cooling off a bit, appetite for contingent software developers and a few other IT roles is as strong as ever. The number of contingent software developers on the job has nearly doubled since pre pandemic levels, yet recent overall aggregate demand for new contingent work is ten points lower than pre pandemic levels. In this edition of our Extended Workforce Intelligence Report, we examine a variety of new findings including:

  • Overall monthly demand for contingent work is running 10 points below pre pandemic levels
  • The largest growth in contingent IT roles is outside of traditional IT hub cities
  • Companies are bringing on contingent HR staff to expand their employee recruiting capacity
